Based on values of community, collaboration, and co-learning, African Community Housing & Development and Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King and Kittitas Counties combine their strengths to deliver high-quality and permanently affordable and family-sized homes that meet the critical needs of BIPOC and low/moderate-income families. This Pilot Program consists of 3 sites donated by the City of Seattle Office of Housing and will provide a total of 65 permanently affordable homeownership units. The sites are located in the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle, one of the most culturally and economically diverse neighborhoods in the Pacific Northwest.

Through our “shared equity” program, these developments create opportunities to promote intergenerational wealth for the BIPOC immigrant and refugee communities of Seattle’s Rainier Valley and address the rampant displacement experienced by low/moderate-income families in the region.

A historic partnership

African Community Housing & Development's affordable housing partnership with Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King & Kittitas Counties has been built upon a foundation of equity. Together, we center Black homeownership and prosperity for Washington's diverse community. ACHD and Habitat SKKC recognize that homeownership is the key to intergenerational wealth in the United States; the Department of Commerce Homeownership Disparities Workgroup found that 49 percent of BIPOC households - and just 31 percent of Black households - own their home, compared to 68 percent of white households.

We would also like to acknowledge the work done before our projects began to ensure these surplus sites were distributed in a way that promotes inclusive development. This effort resulted from the Rainier Valley Affordable Homeownership Initiative, a partnership between the City of Seattle, Sound Transit, and community-based organizations with deep ties to the Rainier Valley area. We are honored to have been entrusted with the development of these properties.
