African Diaspora communities live in USA-designated food deserts, where access to fresh and culturally relevant food is scarce. In response, African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) launched the Delridge Farmers Market for vendors of color throughout King County, many of whom are of African descent. We’ve run the market for three years, developing deep relationships with market vendors. For years, we've listened to their stories of displacement and the barriers to creating successful businesses in Seattle. The Delridge Farmers Market has become a flagship for ACHD and has helped many BIPOC entrepreneurs launch and expand their businesses in a food apartheid zone.

By providing a permanent home for African Diaspora-owned small businesses, ACHD seeks to reduce commercial displacement, build wealth, and create a high-quality small business incubator that responds to community's needs. Using a cooperative ownership model, the Seattle Immigrant and Refugee Public Market (SIRPM) will serve entrepreneurs and small business owners from the immigrant and refugee community in and around the Southwest Seattle area. SIRPM aims to offer approximately 25 retail, grocery, and food business stalls, as well as a commercial kitchen and packaging/distribution facilities, small business incubator space, centralized small business financial services, office space, and a courtyard seating/gathering area for community members and customers.
